Ginger Snaps – Movie Review

by Bryan Pascual

Watching a 90’s or early 2000’s Horror Film is something I truly enjoy even if it’s a trash movie. Ginger Snaps is a dark and gothic coming of age film that describes the fear of growing up and the love of death. The film follows sisters Ginger and Bridgette who bond over death and have made a pact to die before the age of 16, together. When death knocks at both sister’s door, death isn’t as rosy.

The film starts with a strange species attacking dogs in the neighborhood, and some people blame the outcast sisters for the deaths. One night Ginger is attacked by a werewolf, and her transformation begins, while Bridgette does everything she can to save Ginger. As the title says Ginger Snaps, and she snaps bad. An outcast finally becomes popular, while drugs and sex become easier to reach. Bridgette notices Ginger becoming a ‘Monster’ not only physically but mentally. The love they once shared is now overpowered by violence.

The special effects seemed very low budget, but it did not take away from the story. Creating a realistic werewolf is not an easy task, and this film definitely could have done better. Overall, I would recommend Ginger Snaps.
